Alexander the Great.
Known throughout the world and history, Alexander was one of the most successful military commanders in Greek history, conquering almost all of the world known to the Greeks by 323 BC. On that date, however, the legacy of Alexander did not stop. No, instead it became something darker and secretive, something that would come to be known only by a choice few in the coming centuries. For Alexander was intelligent and cunning, but also extremely ambitious. He wanted all the world to rule and would stop at nothing to get it, even at the expense of his own soul. And that was just what he gave up, for the price of immortality and power. Alexander became the first vampire.
Unable to die, Alexander wandered the world. In 8 AD, he met a warrior named Kreios that he found he shared much in common with. Both men were strong leaders and fierce warriors, and in him Alexander saw a companion. He turned the young warrior into a vampire like himself, starting the line of vampire elders who would come to be known as the Four Knights. They travelled over the years, watching as the world around them changed. Three more human beings of specially chosen qualities were turned, the last being Fiachra in 1095.
It was after this point that Alexander began to feel the wear of immortality and the ache of a broken heart, missing the presence of his lover Hephastion, long since passed away. Unable to die, Alexander instead fell into a deep sleep and it fell to the four elders to keep the father of their line safe, to preserve vampirekind.
While Alexander had kept his true nature to the shadows, some sired throughout the centuries brought vampires to the attentions of the mortals, and was met with an equal mixture of belief and outright dismissal from skeptics. Dracula and Elizabeth Bathory were just two who made themselves known in history, and gave hints that the world might not be as forthcoming as thought before. Vampires continued to slowly increase their numbers, but most remained in the shadows, interacting with the human population for sustinance, fun for those vicious enough to toy with mortals, and companionship for those who missed their own mortality.
Now in 2008, mortals and vampires alike exist in co-habitation in a darker San Francisco. The Four Knights have made their current dwelling in a secretive place, carrying on the sacred duty of protecting Alexander’s body. But it won’t be easy, not when the hunting community has been making their way towards San Francisco, intent on cutting down the vampire population.
