The two men walked bare foot down the stone steps and onto the open courtyard. It was another bitterly cold day with a constant bluster of wind, but neither seemed the least bit bothered by it.
One of the men was Lu-Nai, the other; Jet Sung-Ti. Both were of equal build and stature, and both carried long wooden staffs.
They laughed and joked as they walked from the stairway onto the center markings of the square. An almost brotherly appearence constantly washed over the two, loyal to each other to the end.
Lu-Nai openly grinned as his sparring partner spoke the ancient tongue to him, translated, saying - "I'll get you this time."
Jet closed his eyes for a moment then his entire demeanor changed, mirrored by his opponent.
What was once a brotherly love, now seemed like an eternal hatred, as the two stared at each other, white knuckles on the hard, cold staffs, bound in the center by a fading orange cloth.
A gust rolled over the yard and sleet at the two, and in unison with nature Jet lept from his spot towards Lu, who caught the swing of the staff with his own defensive move, then spun towards Jet with a sweeping blow.
His opponent jumped over the staff and rolled into a ready stance, but wasted no time as he once again moved into action.
The sparring was like a dance, as the men jumped and parried the strong blows, avoiding the darting staffs by only inches.
Jet unleashed a flurry of swings in combination with a jump to a roll, breaking Lu-Nai's defence and hit him in the side of the head.
The noise was like a whip catching wood, a loud and dramatic crack bounced around the square and into the wind. Lu fell to the ground, only to snake his body and leap back to his feet.
The wound began to bleed, and Lu was visably shaken, but still they continued to battle, not letting up on anything.
Another flurry from Jet, but this time Lu tangled the staff with his own, flung it to the floor and palmed his adversary in the face. Neatly, Lu positioned his leg behind that of Jet's sending Jet offbalence and crashing to the floor.
"YAH!" Jet screamed and rolled backwards back onto his feet about to charge.
Lu did not let up though, hurtling towards him and landing a drop kick in the man's chest causing him to somersault over backwards and land hard on his front.
"Enough!" Jet called as Lu was about to land what would have been the finishing blow.
The dance was over, and a cold wind washed over the yard once again.
Lu-Nai grinned openly and held out his hand to Jet, who took it and pulled himself up, rubbing his chest as he did so, a smile churning up his lips.
Lu spoke in the Ancient tongue - "You let the pain take over. Do not fall for the anger in a fight, Jet."
Jet nodded, it confirmed what he was thinking, it looked like Lu won again, but it didn't matter to him.
"Let's go and tend to your head." He said and turned for the stairs. "If it wasn't so big, maybe it wouldn't get hit." He added playfully.
Lu-Nai laughed heartily and followed him, picking up Jet's staff on the way.
